Marriage - His Burden or Her Burden?

I'm scared of marriage! Yeah, I said it. *Covering my face*. But seriously, I duff my hat to the men and women who've been in the marriage business for years. Its not like I don't wanna get married, I just get scared at the thought of having to spend the REST OF MY LIFE with ONE PERSON. Wow! So yeah, I'd like to put it off for a few more years. I mean why rush? You're going to spend the rest of your life with this one person anyway. Yet, many have argued that it's a question of finding or being found by that one person whom you love so much, you can't imagine the rest of your life without them, but then, this raises the question, "what is love"? Well, that's a topic for another day.

Sadly, when you look around you, the trend amongst married people isn't exactly encouraging. What with adultery and divorce rates going through the roof, men and women even going as far as murdering their spouses in cold blood! Just the other day, I came across a story of a man that allegedly butchered his wife and abandoned her corpse in their home. And these are people that gazed dreamily into each others' eyes with so much love on their wedding day! But I've also met people with model homes. Couples that are a definition of what God had in mind when He created the concept of marriage. One of my very close aunts keeps telling how blessed she is to have the kind of husband and kids she has. And based on what I see on the outside, hers has all the trappings of a great family.

What I find most uncomfortable however, is that many of us see marriage as an end in itself. MARRIAGE IS A MEANS TO AN END NOT AN END IN ITSELF. The union of two is to help each person better fulfil their destinies and build a formidable team that will "send a legion fleeing". That's why God said to Adam in Genesis "I will send you a help meet" (referring to Eve). Apologies to my non-Christian readers. Marriage isn't only about meeting someone you love, giving birth to healthy kids and living happily ever after...although all these come with the package. Well, that's just an aside.

I've observed an unspoken consensus that it is the responsibility of a woman to keep her marriage working. She must therefore wield her magic wand to resolve all issues in the home front and failure on her part amounts to negligence of her peace keeping duties. Well, to be honest, I do agree that to a large extent, the success of a marriage depends on the woman, but I think it is also important for the man to play an active role in keeping the home together, afterall, you can force a horse to the river but you can't force it to drink from the river, right?

For instance, what happens if you have an abusive husband? Or your husband is cheating on you? Interestingly, most cheating spouses blame it on some level of dissatisfaction in their homes. Will Smith and Jada Pinkette are one of the most successful celebrity couples in Hollywood. They have both often revealed that maintaining an honest and open line of communication is the reason for their successful marriage. I hear they even tell each other when they are sexually attracted to other people! Now that's something. Let's talk about The Bill Clinton/Monica Lewinski saga. Despite the public outrage against Bill, Hillary stuck by her husband and this contributed to stemming the tide of the scandal. Yes, Hillary supported her husband despite his mistake, but this doesn't preclude the fact that he could have scored love points with her in the past which made her decision easier...

So I wanna ask, when it comes to making a marriage work, how much depends on the man and how much depends on the woman?

  1. Good one, but better to depend on God to help one make that final choice. He sees all and knows all

  2. hmmm, very interesting article as usual. I think the problems and the resultant effect (i.e divorces and adultery) with marriages these days is peculiar to this generation and its spurred by impatience, greed and lack of contentment attributable to it. Trust me the solution to it is overwhelmingly not comprehensible hence the only way out is to depend solely on GOD. like I don tire and i even dey fear sef to marry. Make God help me oooo.

  3. after all my parents for instance have never had everything they wanted....the can be classified as lower middle class family, My mum aint the most beautful woman in the word... they have had their ups and downs.Regardless, they have been married for over 33 years.. as far as i know ooo, the option of divorce has never been up for consideration....this is i think have been working due to lack of greed, patience and contentment which is very lacking in these generation of ours.

  4. what a thot provoking piece here.guess when both decide to sign the dotted lines, is not kids play. both have thought about it and decide to take responsiblities for their actions as two have become one now.we just need more of God's help in this generation of ours.it is well

What Love Is Not. By Yomi Owope

Hey Guys, remember when I asked the question "what is love" in my last post on marriage? Well, Yomi Owope sent me this. I find it profound and I think you will also. You can comment with what you think love is not as well. E.g "love is not...". Love is not the idea that I take your freedom in exchange for mine; it is not the fashionable remembrance of anniversaries and birthdays, nor is it the poolside dinner at Smith's with live music and the smell of fresh flowers. I will not tell you that love is the food of the eyes at the sight of light skin and long hair or the fodder for the mind at the whiff of Rabanne. I will not say that love must do for me what I did because of it; neither will one beg quittance of me for a deed done for love. Is love measured by the length of a fathers rod or the gleam of a wife's Gucci? Is it benchmarked by a Bishop's heavy holiness or the fiery fervency of the union leader?

A Constant Contest?

I have come to realize that in life, we are almost ALWAYS in competition whether consciously or unconsciously.Check out the following definition of competition from The Merristem-Webster Dictionary: “…active demand by two or more organisms or kinds of organisms for some resource in short supply”, emphasis on the phrase "in short supply". Have you ever wondered why on the average, we spend the first two decades of our lives getting an education? From Primary School, to Secondary School, to College, we study hard to graduate with good grades. During those years, we write exams, participate in sporting events, get into fights, play games and generally engage in activities that expose us to the concept of winning and losing. On graduating from school, we proceed to the labour market, where it would seem success is heavily hinged on competition. We compete against fellow graduates to emerge the best candidate for the job, we compete against fellow colleagues to get a promot...

I Cheat on my Wife...And It's Her Fault!

“The problem is that once a woman hears the two words ‘I do’, her attitude changes” he said to me matter-of-factly in response to my question “why do you think men cheat on their wives?” I was having this interesting conversation with Mr. Brian (not his real name) who had been married for over 15 years and well…has apparently had his fair share of extra-marital affairs. For me, this was an opportunity to take a walk in the mind of a type of man many of us are quick to judge – the cheating spouse. While I do not agree with everything Mr. Brian said, he made a number of valid points that I’d like to share. Of course he places 80% of the blame of the cheating husband on the woman. His premise is that once a man marries a woman, the woman’s attitude changes because she believes she has conquered him. She often abandons the precedents that she had set before marriage, forgetting that those old habits were the very reason the man married her.
